NEW ADVENTURES

We three travelers, me, Buster and Mister Tom went on a long trip to a place new to me. We went to the glorious north woods. The days were sunny and the nights were cool. Buster and Mister Tom travel there quite often, but this was my first trip there. I had so much fun that I decided to write a poem.

“NEW ADVENTURES” (Copyright 2013 by Captain Eddie)

First excitement with all the packing,
My anticipation was not lacking.

Off we went one early morn,
Adventures ahead as if reborn.

Hours we traveled to places unknown,
Leaving the daily routine of home.

Anxious and alert I could not sit,
Buster stirred, but just a bit.

Each minute, each hour so much to see,
All of this in new country.

Lakes, rivers and forests awaited,
Change I could not have anticipated.

Gray wolf, black bear, and whitetail deer,
The signs suggested they all lived here.

These north woods offered much to explore,
This place I’d never been before.

THE STORIES OF BUSTER J. BROWN AND CAPTAIN EDDIE

Pals-O-Buster™ and Pals-O-Eddie™ know who we are. One of our ardent followers did mention that some folks might be confused; a mostly white-colored dog named “Brown” and a brown-colored dog named “Eddie.” We know that Mister Tom was not thinking ahead when he named us. To help people make sense of this confusion we decided to tell our stories.

Here are our stories as told by each of us.

Buster’s Story

I am Buster Jerry Brown. I am the white-colored, brown-spotted dog. Mister Tom named me after the legendary wild boar hunter of Mississippi, Jerry Brown. Mister Tom liked the alliterative effect of the name Buster Brown, so my name became “Buster Jerry Brown.” Most folks call me Buster or Buster J. When I get stubborn Mister Tom calls me the shiftless hound.

I found Mister Tom when he was wild boar hunting with Jerry Brown in February 2004. I was resting underneath a sticker bush thicket deep in the woods. I think I was lost. I decided to go with the people who found me because I was hungry and tired of living outside all the time. The day I was found I got fresh water and real dog food. The very next day I traveled a long, long way to a dog rescue in the north. People from the dog rescue cleaned me up and got me all healthy. I officially adopted Mister Tom after that. I am the first dog ever who adopted Mister Tom.

People ask what dog breed am I? Well, I am mostly a terrier dog of some sort. In the rural south they call me a “feist” dog. If one searches the Internet for “Decker Giant Rat Terriers” they will see pictures and videos of other dogs that look a lot like me. Mister Tom says that I am a “good boy” and that is all that matters.

I like practically all people critters I meet. I hardly bark at all which is why I have a bell on my collar. When I see some of my best people pals I will whine and cry until they say hello to me. I like doing stuff and going places with Mister Tom. Since I decided to live with Mister Tom I have always done obedience training. I like doing this because it teaches Mister Tom how to let us dogs know what he wants us to do. To show Mister Tom how smart I am I compete in dog obedience. I usually do well and I have bunches of obedience titles.

Eddie’s Story

I am Eddie. I am the brindle, mostly brown-colored dog you see in the pictures. My name at the dog rescue was Eddie and Mister Tom simply thought that I looked like an “Eddie,” whatever that means. My registered name is “Captain Eddie.” I am named after Captain Eddie Vernon Rickenbacker, the World War I flying ace and Medal of Honor recipient. Mister Tom wanted me to have a heroic name because he says I am a heroic and special fellow. My pals call me Eddie or the Ed-ster. When I am stubborn Mister Tom calls me EDDIE in a low, deep voice.

I adopted Mister Tom in November 2012 after he came to visit me at the dog rescue place near his home. I came to that dog rescue from a dog rescue in Kentucky. Before I adopted Mister Tom I lived all of my life in dog rescue places. I never lived in a real home until I adopted Mister Tom. It sure is nice to live in a house in a neighborhood.

I am a mixed-breed dog of some sort. Walt, the person who taught Mister Tom how to better understand dogs, thinks I might have “coursing hound” in my mix. I am a tall, lean, deep-chested dog with long legs and a naturally bobbed tail.

I like people. Sometimes when I meet new people I am a little shy. I am getting over being shy around new people. After I meet new people and they give me pets and scratches I am quite friendly. I like sitting next to people or lying down in front of them and touching them all the time if I can. I do bark when Mister Tom goes outside with Buster and leaves me inside. The only time I bark when I am outside is when I see the evil squirrel critters. I know that squirrel critters spend a lot of time in trees so I keep a keen watch for them when I am outside. Mister Tom is teaching me the obedience stuff that Buster knows. I would rather play with my toys than do obedience stuff. I think Mister Tom knows this because we play together when we finish doing obedience stuff.

DOG SPRING

DOG SPRING (Copyright 2013 by Buster J Brown)

What lie ‘neath snow and now exposed,
A treasure trove for my nose.

Overhead a chorus not heard since autumn,
Migrating birds join in spring’s anthem.

Grass still brown yet sunshine warming,
Bunnies and squirrels are back out roaming.

Spring is here we dogs exclaim,
With renewed zest and spirit aflame.

BUNNIES AND SQUIRRELS

BUNNIES AND SQUIRRELS (Copyright 2013 by Buster J. Brown and Captain Eddie)

Each trip OUTSIDE is filled with excitement,

‘Cause I’m a dog who is critter savant.

There are bunnies and squirrels and critters galore,

And sights and smells of so many more.

Knowing “squirrels” means look to the trees,

While “bunnies” are aground as they flee.

I watch geese and ducks fly overhead,

Never to chase, just gander instead.

Such pure and simple joy I embrace,

Perhaps this time I’ll get to chase.

My New Home

Hi, I am Eddie, the mostly brow-colored dog in the pictures. Eddie was the name I had at the shelter. When Mister Tom brought me to Buster’s and his home I got a longer name. Since I am a special dog, Mister Tom gave me a very special name. My full name is “Captain Eddie Vernon Rickenbacker.” I was named after the World War I flying Ace and Medal of Honor recipient.  Pals-O-Eddie mostly call me Eddie but Mister Tom sometimes calls me “The Ed-ster.”

Like Buster I am a mixed-breed dog. Just by looking at us I do not think we came from the same mix.

Mister Tom is the one who found Buster when he was lost in the woods so Mister Tom knows Buster’s story. Mister Tom found me in a shelter so he only knows bits and pieces of my background. Still, I have an interesting story which I put to poetry below.

MY NEW HOME (Copyright 2013 by Captain Eddie)

I came to town from ‘ole Kentuck’,
In a scary vehicle called a truck.

New places, new sights, new sounds and smells,
How exciting that shelter in which I dwelled.

One day I met a man named Mister Tom,
A week later I met his dog Buster Brown.

After that I moved to my forever home,
A place I can call my very own.

Now I play, get pets and go to obedience class,
And come home to rest and snooze at last.
